Kentucky Sheriff's Office Clarifies Role Amid Husband's Connection to Incest Case

Kentucky Sheriff's Office Clarifies Role Amid Husband's Connection to Incest Case

A Kentucky sheriff's office has released a statement clarifying its connection to the husband of a woman accused of sexually abusing a child under 12. As previously reported, Lauren Winans, from Bardstown, was arrested on Thursday on charges of incest, sexual abuse, and first-degree sodomy involving a child under 12. According to an indictment returned by a Nelson County grand jury, she is accused of committing sexual offenses against a child under 12 between January 1, 2022, and November 20, 2022. Lauren Winans could face life in prison for alleged child sex offenses. Credit: Nelson County Sheriff's Department Per The New York Post , the indictment alleges that Winans "committed the offense of sodomy in the first degree by engaging in deviate sexual intercourse with C.G.W., a person less than twelve years of age". The 31-year-old is also accused of incest, with the indictment claiming that she "committed the offense of incest when she had sexual intercourse or deviate sexual intercourse with a person whom she knew to be an ancestor who was less than twelve years of age." It remains unclear whether the alleged incest offense involved the same child mentioned in the other charges against Winans, with court documents not specifying how the alleged victim or victims are related to her. Kentucky's sheriff's office released a statement Shortly after the woman's arrest, attention turned to her husband, Andy, who works in law enforcement. Questions circulated online about his connection to the Nelson County Sheriff's Office, prompting the department to clarify that he was a former employee who now serves with the Bardstown Police Department. The sheriff's office also stressed that it had no involvement in the investigation into his wife and had not been aware of the allegations against her. In a statement addressing public inquiries, the department said : "The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is issuing the following statement to address recent public inquiries and provide accurate information: Ongoing Investigation: The Kentucky State Police (KSP) is the primary investigating agency regarding the allegations involving Lauren Winans." "The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office was not aware of these allegations, holds no details regarding the case, and is not involved in the investigation. Inquiries should be directed to KSP," they continued. The department spoke about pictures circulating online, saying: "Regarding the photos featuring an agency vehicle, our administration deemed the conduct completely inappropriate. Prompt disciplinary action was taken at the time of the incident." They then shared a "personnel clarification" about Andy, writing that he "is no longer employed by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office. He resigned from our agency and joined the Bardstown Police Department in early 2026". "Our office remains fully committed to accountability, transparency, and upholding the trust of the Nelson County community," they concluded. Winans is currently being held in the LaRue County Detention Center. Her arraignment is scheduled for November 5. She has not yet posted the $250,000 bail she's being held on. She could get life in jail if convicted on the top count of first-degree sodomy. Featured image credit: Nelson County Sheriff's Department

Colleen Conrad's Heartfelt Reaction to Collin Gosselin's Memoir

Colleen Conrad's Heartfelt Reaction to Collin Gosselin's Memoir

Jon Gosselin’s ex Colleen Conrad is paying tribute to her ex’s son Collin Gosselin. Conrad, who dated Jon from 2014 to 2021 following Jon’s split from Collin’s mom, Kate Gosselin, shared a touching Instagram post on Friday, October 23. For the post, Conrad shared a series of images of herself and Collin over the years and reacted to the release of his memoir, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood. “When you came into my life, you had already been through more than any child should ever have to experience,” Conrad wrote. “I didn’t know what the years ahead would bring, but I knew I loved you and wanted you to feel safe, loved, and supported.” Conrad continued to gush over Collin in the lengthy caption as shared that he played just as important of a role in her life as she did in his. “Watching you grow into the man you are today has been one of the greatest joys of my life,” Conrad continued. “Listening to your book was incredibly emotional. It brought back beautiful memories, but also painful ones. I was going through breast cancer, the end of my relationship with your dad, and so many changes in my own life.” She added, “Through it all, there was a teenage boy who needed me. And what you may never fully realize is how much I needed you, too. We helped each other through some incredibly difficult times.” https://www.instagram.com/p/De2Fh0JxOZm/?hl=en Conrad noted she felt incredibly emotional when reading Collin’s tribute to her in the memoir. She went on to emphasize the love she will always have for Collin and vowed to always be there for him no matter what. “As proud as I am of your book, I’m even prouder of the man you’ve become. No matter how old you get or where life takes you, I will always be your mom,” she wrote. “I will always love you and cheer you on. Congratulations, Collin. You deserve all the happiness and success life has to offer. Love you always. ❤️.” In his book, Collin details growing up with his seven siblings — twins Mady and Cara, now 26, and fellow sextuplets Joel, Aeden, Hannah, Alexis and Leah, now 22 — and the abuse he allegedly endured from his mother, Kate. (Kate has long denied any allegations of abuse, neglect or wrongdoing.) Taking to the comments section of Conrad’s Instagram post, Collin responded to her heartfelt words. “I love you ❤️ I loved that you say you needed me too. It just shows how meant to be everything was. If I could’ve gone through all the hard things again I’d gladly do it, because it led me to you,” he wrote. “You’re kind, loving, funny and you love in a way that a real mother should. I’ll forever be grateful to have you in my life. Thank you for listening, showing up, and never giving up on that young, broken, hurting little boy who didn’t believe in himself. Sometimes all we need is to know our mom believes in us and it gives us enough faith in ourselves ❤️❤️.”

Chris Pratt's Powerful Faith Legacy: What He Hopes to Pass to His Kids

Chris Pratt's Powerful Faith Legacy: What He Hopes to Pass to His Kids

Chris Pratt is hopeful that his steadfast faith will be his family’s legacy. “I'm, for the most part, always gonna be a man of faith,” Pratt, 47, told Fox News Digital in an interview published Thursday, October 22. “My faith is how I start my day, it's how I end my day. It's the most important thing that I'll be able to pass on to my kids.” The Terminal List star is a father of four, sharing son Jack, 14, with ex-wife Anna Faris and three younger children with wife Katherine Schwarzenegger. (Pratt and Schwarzenegger, 36, are parents of daughters Lyla, 6, and Eloise, 4, as well as son Ford, 23 months.) “It's an incredible blessing to be a father. It's also a lot of hard work,” Pratt acknowledged to the outlet. “I want to do my best. I basically want to get right everything my dad got right and get right everything my dad got wrong. And I'm sure I'll screw up both, you know?” Pratt previously revealed that he turned to religion after Jack was born prematurely in 2012. “When my son Jack was fighting for his life, I found myself back on my knees, pleading to God for a miracle,” Pratt wrote in an essay published via his mother-in-law Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper in December 2025. “I promised that if Jack survived, I would devote my life to sharing God’s message. This time I meant it.” Pratt and Jack’s solid belief in religion, however, has admittedly caused friction with Faris, 49. “I didn’t grow up with religion. He’s asked me to accept Jesus Christ,” the Overboard actress said on the “Dear Chelsea” podcast in August. “I told him that I would do anything for him, including this, but it’s still going to take a whole lot of long conversations.” Faris, who described Jack as emotionally “solid as a tugboat,” has since “tried to challenge him” on certain ideas. “I’m like, ‘Do you think it’s a luxury that you get to be pro-life? Do you think that’s kind of a luxury?’ He’s like, ‘Maybe,'” she said of Jack’s stance on reproductive rights. “Or I’ll say, ‘So what do you think of this megapastor that’s kind of a grifter? What do you think?’ He’s like, ‘Oh, megapastors are the worst.’ So it’s like, ‘OK, we’re getting there.'” Faris continued at the time, “I’m appreciative that he’s examining religion the way he is in terms of recognizing hypocrisy, starting to recognize hypocrisy, and I’m appreciative that we can have these long conversations.”

Movie Theater Chaos: Furious Moviegoer Sparks Wild Brawl Over Four Cans

See more of our coverage in your search results. A movie theater worker was beaten by a furious woman and her boyfriend after she was allegedly told she couldn’t bring four cans of outside drinks into a Los Angeles-area cinema — sparking a wild brawl caught on camera.Ruby Arcos Delacruz said she was simply enforcing the theater’s no-outside-food-and-drinks policy when a routine interaction spiraled into a violent showdown Tuesday night at Regency Theatres in Van Nuys.Delacruz said the trouble began when she asked to inspect a woman’s bag before allowing her inside and discovered four cans of beverages. An employee is allegedly physically assaulted by a woman for not letting her bring snacks into a movie at a Regency Theatres in Van Nuys.“I’m really sorry but we don’t allow outside drinks. I’m going to have to ask you to store that in your car,” Delacruz recalled telling the customer in an Instagram post. But the seemingly routine request apparently sent the moviegoer into a rage.According to Delacruz, the woman began hurling insults and calling her a “bitch” under her breath before handing the forbidden refreshments to her male companion, who took them outside. While waiting for him to return, the woman allegedly continued berating Delacruz over the theater’s rules and accused her of talking behind her back.Things took an ugly turn when the couple returned.Delacruz claimed the woman suddenly struck her in the face multiple times as she attempted to reenter the theater. Her manager rushed to intervene, but allegedly became another target of the couple’s fury.Ruby Arcos Delacruz said the trouble began when she asked to inspect a woman’s bag before allowing her inside and discovered four cans of beverages. The enraged woman allegedly punched the manager, knocking his glasses to the ground, while her male companion joined the physical confrontation. The woman then allegedly stomped on the manager’s fallen glasses before turning her attention back to Delacruz.Video of the chaotic confrontation shows employees and the couple tangled in a physical altercation, with one worker apparently wielding a broomstick during the mayhem.Delacruz said security was on a break when the violence erupted, leaving employees scrambling for help.“Thank god my manager was there and he defended me and himself the best that he could without having to throw punches,” Delacruz said. “The most he did was keep them at arm’s length.”The Los Angeles Police Department told the California Post that officers responded to a battery call at approximately 7:45 p.m. Tuesday. The suspects were reportedly still at the theater when police were called but had fled by the time officers arrived. Paramedics were requested for minor injuries, and officers filed a battery report. The shaken employee later blasted the alleged attackers in followup Instagram post.“All for 4 fucking drinks. I tell her policy and she responds with violence,” she fumed. “I don’t get paid enough to deal with guests such as her and her boyfriend.”The shocking footage sparked outrage online, with commenters praising the workers for fighting back. The suspects were reportedly still at the theater when police were called but had fled by the time officers arrived..“You deserve a raise, additional money for this traumatizing experience. Or leave because they don’t pay you enough to deal with this,” one person wrote.Another cheered the employee who appeared to jump into the fray with a broom.“I watched the broom stick part a few times 👏👏👏 was cheering lol,” the commenter wrote. The President of Regency Theatres, Lyndon Golin, said in a statement to the Post they are working with the LAPD to identify the individuals responsible and hold them accountable. “The safety of our employees and our guests is our highest priority, and what happened to our team members on Tuesday night is unacceptable,” Golin said. “Our staff were doing their jobs, and no one should face violence for that.”The LAPD said the case remains an open investigation and no arrests have been made. Rhode Island School District Under Fire for Allegedly Concealing Gender Transitions

Rhode Island School District Under Fire for Allegedly Concealing Gender Transitions

See more of our coverage in your search results. A conservative legal group is calling on the Trump administration to investigate a Rhode Island school district over a policy that allegedly allows school officials to facilitate students’ gender transitions behind their parents’ backs, accusing the district of violating multiple federal civil rights laws.America First Legal (AFL) filed a formal complaint Tuesday with the Justice Department and Department of Education targeting Westerly Public Schools in Westerly, Rhode Island, over a transgender student policy adopted in 2017.“Westerly Public Schools’ policy blatantly violates federal law, tramples on parents’ rights, and embraces radical gender ideology,” Ian Prior, senior counsel at America First Legal, told Fox News Digital in a statement. “Male students claiming to be female receive every privilege while actual female students are shoved aside. AFL is calling on the Department of Justice and the Department of Education to step in and hold WPS accountable.”The complaint from America First Legal alleges that Westerly Public Schools’ transgender student policy, adopted in 2017, allows school officials to facilitate students’ gender transitions, including changes to names, pronouns and school records, without parental notification or consent. The group also alleges the policy permits students to use bathrooms, locker rooms and participate in sports based on their gender identity rather than biological sex, while requiring students who object to seek separate accommodations. The policy defines “Gender Identity” as “a person’s deeply held sense or psychological knowledge of their own gender. One’s gender identity can be the same or different than the gender assigned at birth. Most people have a gender identity that matches their assigned gender at birth. For some, however, their gender identity is different from their assigned gender.” America First Legal filed a complaint against Rhode Island’s Westerly Public Schools over a policy concealing student gender transitions. Getty ImagesThe guidance for secondary students reads, “Generally, notification to a student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) about their gender identity, expression, or transition is unnecessary, as they are already aware and supportive. However, some transgender students do not want their parents to know about their transgender status. These situations must be addressed on a case-by-case basis and require schools to balance the goal of supporting the student with the desire that parents be kept informed about their children.”It continues, “In these circumstances, school administration should ask the superintendent for direction on how to proceed. If the administration determines that notifying the family carries risks for the student, it should work closely with the student to assess the degree to which, if any, the family will be involved in the process and must consider the age, health, well-being and safety of the student.”America First Legal alleges the district’s policy violates multiple federal laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), by withholding information about students’ gender transitions from parents, and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), by allowing certain student evaluations without parental consent. The conservative legal group has called on the Trump administration to investigate public schools across Westerly, Rhode Island, for the near-decades-long policy. Westerly High SchoolThe group also argues the policy violates Title IX by permitting students to use bathrooms, locker rooms and participate in sports based on gender identity rather than biological sex, potentially compromising female students’ privacy, safety and athletic opportunities, and is urging the Trump administration to investigate the district, require changes to its policies and ensure compliance with federal law, including parental notification requirements. The complaint marks the latest effort by America First Legal to challenge school policies it argues infringe on parental rights. The group previously developed resources in 2022 to help parents use the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) to hold schools accountable. AFL pointed to a recent Trump administration lawsuit against Kansas City Public Schools in Kansas over allegations involving undisclosed student gender transitions and violations of FERPA and the PPRA, saying it is seeking a similar outcome in Westerly. The Department of Education told Fox News Digital that it does not confirm complaints.A spokesperson for the Department of Justice told Fox News Digital in a statement that, “The Department has received the complaint and will review it. As a matter of policy, the Department does not confirm or deny the existence of investigations. The Justice Department is committed to enforcing Title IX and to protecting the fundamental right of parents to direct the upbringing and education of their children.”Fox News Digital reached out to Westerly Public Schools for comment.

Why Alexa and Carlos PenaVega's 'DWTS' Experience Still Haunts Them

Why Alexa and Carlos PenaVega's 'DWTS' Experience Still Haunts Them

Alexa PenaVega and husband Carlos PenaVega became the first married couple to compete on Dancing With the Stars in 2015 — and the experience still haunts them, for better or worse. “Guys, Dancing With the Stars sucked for my wife and it was my fault,” Carlos, 37, confessed during the Thursday, October 22, episode of the couple’s “LexLos” podcast, recalling their joint experience on season 21 of the ABC competition series. Alexa, 38, didn’t disagree, responding, “Honestly, yeah.” Carlos, who was partnered with Witney Carson, admitted, “I was jealous of her and her partner,” who was pro Mark Ballas. The Big Time Rush singer then teased, “I beat my wife on Dancing with the Stars,” before admitting, “I got further than her and it came with a lot of baggage, good and bad baggage.” Alexa was a little surprised by her husband’s “baggage” comment, but he reminded her, “Was the show not difficult? Did it not come with stress? Was it not hard losing to your [husband]?” to which she nodded. The Spy Kids actress noted that her experience on the show “was as good as it was bad,” after making it to week 9 when both she and Carlos were in the bottom two but she was the one ultimately sent home. (Carlos ended up in fourth place, while Alexa ended in sixth.) Alexa admitted that Carlos’ jealousy did taint how much fun she had in the ballroom, saying that they are “in such a great place in our relationship now” but looking back it wasn’t an ideal situation. “I would have had so much more fun on the show were it not for Carlos. Carlos was really competitive and very jealous,” she continued. Carlos acknowledged that he had a hard time dealing with his wife dancing so closely with another man 10 hours a day — even though he was doing the same thing with another woman — and he couldn’t “imagine” how he’d feel if he was stuck at home during the process. “Thank God we did it together, because I would not have been able to handle it,” he said. Alexa pointed out, “You couldn’t handle it and we did do it together.” Despite the ups and downs, the pair ultimately agreed that they “had a great time” and would do it again, especially because Alexa said it shined a light on how being married is a gift and not a burden. “So many people see marriage as this ball and chain and they don’t see the beauty in it,” Alexa shared. “Love you Mark, but [Carlos] is my real partner.” Carlos added, “We had so much fun together, and then it was over. It was hard, but what an experience we got to do together.” Carlos and Alexa tied the knot in 2014, competing against each other on DWTS the following year. They have since welcomed four children: Ocean, 9, Kingston, 7, Rio, 5, and Indy, who was stillborn in April 2024. The couple have also continued to work side by side, including costarring in Hallmark’s Picture Perfect Mysteries, as well as rom-com Love in the Limelight and Great American Family’s Mr. Manhattan and Get Him Back for Christmas. Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

Charles Barkley Slams Aaron Rodgers Over Explosive Comments About Exes

Charles Barkley Slams Aaron Rodgers Over Explosive Comments About Exes

Charles Barkley is ready to leave Inside the NBA — but don’t expect an Aaron Rodgers-style takedown on his way out. “Yeah, it’s time to go,” Barkley, 63, began on the Wednesday, October 21, broadcast of Mad Dog Sports Radio. “It’s been a great run; I’m grateful and thankful for everything that’s happened to me, but man, I’ll be 64 years old.” Barkley decided to hang up the mic after his fellow broadcaster Ernie Johnson Jr. revealed his own retirement plan. “I said, ‘Hey, let’s go out together.’ He told me this a couple of years ago, and he asked me to stay for two years because he was turning 70,” the NBA icon recalled on Wednesday. “I said, ‘You want me to stay for two years, I’ll stay for two years.’ That was last year and this year, so if Ernie changes his mind, I might reconsider, but I don’t see him changing his mind. I would definitely not do the show without Ernie.” After radio host Adam Schein likened Barkley’s final radio season to Rodgers’ supposed last year in the NFL, Barkley hit back at the comparison. “I tell you what though, I’m not gonna bury everybody going out the door like Aaron,” Barkley quipped, per Awful Announcing. “I’m not gonna burn every bridge and talk bad about all my exes on my way out the door like he’s doing.” Rodgers, who has insisted that the 2026 NFL season will be his last, took shots at his respective exes Shailene Woodley and Danica Patrick during a wide-ranging interview on Cam Heyward’s “Not Just Football” podcast last month. “The height of their fame is when they were with me,” Rodgers, 42, alleged at the time. “They get clicks when they say my name. Just like the idiots on TV get clicks when they say my name because I am a lightning rod.” Rodgers notably dated Patrick, 44, from 2018 to 2020. “I dated Danica and she had just retired,” Rodgers recalled on the September podcast episode. “She was depressed and not fun to be around. But I didn’t leave her because I was trying to be there and be a good partner. Then it was going a certain direction, obviously, there was no intimacy, there was nothing.” Rodgers further claimed that their relationship ended when he turned down the former Nascar driver’s request to jointly buy a house in Malibu, California. “I said no. She said, ‘Well you know what that means then,’” he alleged. “I said, ‘Yeah, that’s the way things are going.’ She said, ‘Well let’s get counseling.’” Months after their breakup, Rodgers moved on with Woodley, 34. They confirmed their engagement in 2021 before going their separate ways one year later. “I dated Shailene. I propose and she says yes. Maybe she felt like she was forced to make a decision. She could have said no,” Rodgers alleged on Heyward’s podcast. “A couple days after that, she tells me, ‘You know, before we get married, I gotta go f*** this guy.’” Rodgers also hit back on the Emmy winner’s previous claim that the quarterback “ruined her life and gave her crazy depression” for ending their engagement. “The actuality is, she told me that and then she took off the ring by March [2021]. I proposed in December [2020]. Took off the ring by March,” he alleged. “We had a couple times where we tried to get reunited and nothing ever happened. There wasn’t even a relationship in ‘22 to break off. She literally told me, ‘I don’t want to be with you’ after we tried to have some kind of reconciliation in 2021. There’s just a lot of narratives out there that are just not true.” Neither Woodley nor Patrick have publicly addressed Rodgers’ claims. Us reached out for comment at the time. Rodgers has since moved on, announcing in 2025 that he married a woman named Brittani after a private romance.

The Rediscovery of the Bangka Slow Loris: A Venomous Primate in Unexpected Places

The Rediscovery of the Bangka Slow Loris: A Venomous Primate in Unexpected Places

See more of our coverage in your search results. They couldn’t slow its roll.An Indonesian primate that was lost to science for nearly 89 years has blown scientists’ minds after resurfacing in a shockingly urban setting. This nocturnal tree-dweller, dubbed the Bangka slow loris, belongs to the world’s only group of venom-packing primates, activating its toxin by licking a gland on its own arm. The Bangka slow loris vanished in the 1930s and was feared extinct until it was rediscovered recently in people’s backyards, alongside roads and on power lines. Bloomberg via Getty Images A Bangka slow loris hangs from a tree on the island of Bangka, east of Sumatra, Indonesia. via REUTERSA denizen of the Indonesian islands of Bangka, Sumatra, and Borneo, the googly-eyed herbivore was last documented in 1937 and feared extinct — until now.In a groundbreaking study, researchers revealed that more than 90 of the slow lorises had been documented across various locales in Bangka between 2015 and 2025.Many had turned up in backyards, along roadsides, and even on power lines on the populous island, prompting locals to alert the Alobi Wildlife Rescue Center, Phys.org reported.Unfortunately, many were in bad shape due to various injuries, including contact with electrical wires, while one had been savaged by a dog. Despite their wounds, the org reportedly managed to recover and release 86 into the wild. The researchers were astonished that the rare creature could be hiding in plain sight for so long. “What I find particularly astonishing is that such a charismatic and distinctive primate has received so little scientific attention for nearly a century,” study author Timon Glaw, a graduate student in nature conservation at the Haus des Meeres Aqua Terra Zoo in Vienna, Austria, told Reuters. “Its rediscovery also offers hope that other species feared to be extinct may still survive in places where scientists have not looked for decades.” He added, “After all, Bangka is just about an hour flight from Jakarta, one of the largest cities in the world.”Indeed, someone’s backyard is likely the last place to find this elusive creature, which is more closely related to lemurs than monkeys. The Bangka slow loris is one of the smaller members of its genus, measuring just 10 inches on average — five inches less than its cousin, the Sumatran slow loris, Gizmodo reported. It’s also one of the most lethal, packing enough venom to cause a person to go into anaphylactic shock, although the toxin is primarily used in defensive grooming rituals with other members of its own kind.Unfortunately, these shy leaf-eaters have more to fear from us. In a statement, Alobi Wildlife Rescue Center Director Langka Sani noted that the creature’s natural habitat “has shrunk significantly because of illegal tin mining and massive land clearing for oil palm plantations.” “We are glad to contribute to the scientific record to show that the Bangka slow loris is not lost, but the species is still very close to extinction,” they said. Currently, the rare animal is listed as “critically endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.Glaw said rediscovering the primate is “only the first step” and that they’ll need a “long-term conservation strategy” — complete with studies, surveys and habitat protection — to make sure it doesn’t become extinct for real.

Former Dancing With the Stars pro Maks Chmerkovskiy is weighing in after Alan Bersten stood in for Val Chmerkovskiy on Dedication Night. "I mean, Alan stepped in for me at some point as well, so I'm very familiar with Alan stepping in," Maks, 46, exclusively told Us ahead of the 2026 Dancers Against Cancer's Gala of the Stars at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 22. "He did a great job. I think everybody can move on." News broke on Saturday, October 17, that Val, 40, would not perform with partner Jenna Dewan on season 35's Dedication Night after he made a controversial comment toward judge Carrie Ann Inaba, who called out a lift in Jenna Johnson's Super Bowl Night samba with Harry Shum Jr. Val defended his wife via social media — claiming in a since-deleted post that he almost went "Fresh Prince" on Inaba, 58 — before issuing a public apology. As Val's suspension made headlines, Us confirmed Bersten, 32, would be stepping in for the Tuesday, October 20, episode. He joined Dewan, 45, for a smooth Viennese waltz dedicated to her mother, Nancy Smith, with the actress earning her first 10 of the season. "[Val and I] were in communication," Bersten told Good Morning America on Tuesday about preparing for the routine on such short notice. "And he was like, 'Change whatever you want. Do whatever you want. Just enjoy.' So we had a lot of back and forth." While Bersten's involvement raised some eyebrows — DWTS alum Gleb Savchenko was particularly vocal about the choice before Tuesday's show — it's not the first time he's covered for a fellow pro. Back in 2017, Bersten filled in for Maks, who suffered a calf injury during rehearsals. Then a member of the troupe, Bersten joined Heather Morris for four weeks of the 24th season while Maks recovered. Bersten stepped in for Maks once again during season 25, dancing with Vanessa Lachey as Maks dealt with a "personal issue." Years later, during season 31, Bersten performed with Gabby Windey on Halloween Night after Val, her original partner, tested positive for COVID. Following his brief suspension, Val is expected to return to the ballroom with Dewan as season 35 continues. While Maks has been tuning in to the competition, he told Us on Thursday he's never voted for anyone on the show — "not even for myself." Maks was joined by a handful of DWTS alums at Thursday's event, including Sasha Farber, Kym Johnson-Herjavec and former contestant Hilaria Baldwin. "I've known these people for many, many years, and it's very personal. And I love that now this type of room is full of people that I'm very close with because we kind of all made it together, and that makes me very happy, very proud, very proud of us," Maks told Us. "I think I'm mostly excited about the end result of tonight when we announce how much we raised [to support dancers battling cancer]." Maks was also looking forward to spending the evening with icons Janet Jackson and Missy Elliott. "I mean, that's insane," he said. "I don't care how much I've done and how much access I've had in the last 20 years being here, I'm lucky. I'm blessed. It's never gonna be old."
