According to the think tank, nearly one-quarter of U.S. workers receive no paid vacation at all, a figure that rises to 57 percent among the lowest-paid 10 percent of workers.How the U.S. Compares With Other CountriesAcross the OECD, a statutory minimum of four weeks—or 20 working days—of annual leave is standard.Europe and Oceania: Countries including Australia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, and Switzerland provide roughly four weeks as a baseline minimum. The United Kingdom mandates 28 days, or 5.6 weeks, for a standard five-day schedule, while Luxembourg guarantees 26 working days. A Nebraska mom's postpartum health scare led to the discovery of a chronic genetic condition she never knew she had. Bethany Worthey-Williams, 24, shared images from the CT scan that ultimately revealed she had autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), an inherited condition that causes fluid-filled cysts to grow in the kidneys over time. The diagnosis came just weeks after she gave birth. ...Worthey-Williams, who is a mom of two with husband 29-year-old Vincent Williams, told Newsweek that she first became concerned shortly after delivery when she experienced elevated blood pressure while still in hospital. Although doctors kept her for an extra night of monitoring, she felt well enough to return home the following day. "Everything was good for a couple of days, and then I got a migraine that came out of nowhere, along with abdominal pain and shortness of breath," Worthey-Williams said. She tried managing the symptoms at home with painkillers, caffeine, heating pads and ice packs, but nothing brought relief. "The migraine lasted for about a week, and I still had high blood pressure, so I went into my local ER," Worthey-Williams said. She said staff at the facility attributed her symptoms to the normal challenges of recovering from childbirth. "I was raised to just push through the pain, so this sort of emphasized that belief," Worthey-Williams said. But the symptoms refused to go away. Concerned, the mom of two contacted her obstetrician who urged her to seek further medical care if the migraine remained unmanageable. A few days later, her husband drove her to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. "When we got to this hospital, the difference in care was as clear as day and night," Worthey-Williams said. "I felt seen and heard." Doctors diagnosed her with severe postpartum preeclampsia—a serious complication that can develop after childbirth, causing dangerously high blood pressure and signs of organ damage.She was then admitted her for treatment, but it was an unexpected finding during her hospital stay that would change the course of her life. After noting unusual abdominal tenderness, an emergency physician ordered a CT scan with contrast. The images revealed numerous cysts on both kidneys, kidney stones and lesions on her liver. Worthey-Williams shared the image from her CT scan in a post on TikTok (@bethanyworthey), writing that she was "forever thankful" for the referral on the text overlay.At first, she had little idea what the diagnosis meant. "I was stunned because I had never even heard of polycystic kidney disease," Worthey-Williams said. "No one in my family is known to have the condition, even though it’s genetic." Subsequent blood testing confirmed she carried the ADPKD1 gene mutation. The news left her spiraling. "How could this be happening to me? Why am I the only one who has this disease in a family of 8? What does this mean for my daughters?" Worthey-Williams recalled wondering. Looking back, she said she now questions whether years of unexplained health issues may have been connected. Before her most recent pregnancy, she experienced recurrent ruptured ovarian cysts and wonders whether they may have been related, although she acknowledged there is limited research linking the two. Seven months after her diagnosis, Worthey-Williams has experienced recurring kidney stones, blood in her urine and chronic pain. Her nephrologist also told her that each of her daughters has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the disease. For now, Worthey-Williams is focused on modeling healthy habits and encouraging an active lifestyle for her children while navigating the challenges of a diagnosis she never saw coming. "I can only hope and pray that my girls don’t have this disease," she said. "And if they do, I pray there is a cure by the time they’re diagnosed. They don’t deserve to live with this disease. CBS“Initially, I really thought I broke my jaw,” Hathaway told CBS Philadelphia.“I hadn’t lost consciousness, I wasn’t nauseous… I felt fine other than being a little bit sore and my ego being a little bit bruised,” Hathaway said.Nauseating footage from the operating table shared with the outlet shows doctors carefully plucking a long, thick, leafy stick from Hathaway’s head.Gnarly X-ray images showed the tree branch going through his cheek, nose, eye and up into his brain.Once Hathaway was rushed to the hospital, doctors determined they needed to call in a specialist.“This was a pretty huge piece of tree that was stuck through his face and into his brain. A grandmother has spoken of the devastating moment she discovered she had undergone the wrong surgery after hospital staff allegedly confused her with another patient who shared the same first name. Instead, she says surgeons mistakenly removed a significant portion of her external genitalia after confusing her with another patient. Recalling the events before the operation, Buchanan said staff called out the wrong name before reassuring her she was the correct patient. “They called Deborah, and I said, ‘Did you mean Buchanan?’ And they said, ‘Oh yes, you’ll do.’” She remembered another patient speaking up at the same time. “The woman next to me said, ‘I’m Deborah,’ and they said, ‘Oh no, we’ve got the right one.’” Having worked for years as a dental nurse, Buchanan said she was shocked by the way patients were being identified. She explained that she would never have addressed a patient using only their first name in her own profession. After surgery, Buchanan realized that something was seriously wrong when she went to the bathroom and began bleeding heavily. “She came in, I said, ‘Can you explain why I’m bleeding so badly?’ She said, ‘Oh, that’s part of the operation.’ And I said, ‘What operation?’ I said, ‘I had it on here,’ and as I touched it, it was still there.” A junior surgeon later examined her, but Buchanan said they appeared confused when she questioned why surgery had been carried out on a completely different part of her body. She contacted her husband to tell him the hospital had performed the wrong procedure before eventually being discharged with what she described as very little explanation. “I got a little bit to say that because of the two Debras, and also they were understaffed at the time. I found it very difficult to listen to,” she said. The aftermath of the operation Despite the horrific experience, Buchanan later had to return to the same hospital to undergo the operation she had initially required to remove the skin cancer. “I was terrified,” she admitted. She said the incident has had a lasting emotional impact, leaving her anxious whenever she attends medical appointments. “Every time I have to go to the doctor, anxious; I’ve lost my confidence.” Buchanan added: “You can’t make a mistake on a person. It’s not like breaking a cup. It’s life to them.” Medical negligence lawyer Erin Monsalve Fear of Carbone Lawyers described the alleged mistake as almost unimaginable. “The fact that she was never consulted nor consented appropriately for the surgery prior to it taking place, and I think that’s one of the biggest things that it boils down to,” she said. In a statement, Western Health chief operating officer John Ferraro said patient safety remained the organization's highest priority. “Due to our obligations to protect patient privacy and confidentiality, we are unable to comment on the care of any individual patient,” he said. Ferraro added that, under Victoria's Statutory Duty of Candour requirements, when an adverse patient event occurs the health service provides “an apology, meet[s] with the patient, undertake[s] a review of the incident, and share[s] the findings and actions taken to help prevent a recurrence.” Featured Image.
